Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

This problem began for me in Ubuntu 8.10 and continues with 9.04.

If the user changes the icon for trash by: right click, properties, select custom icon, the trash will no longer respond to wholesale icon theme changes initiated by the "Appearance Preferences" menu. Further, the icon does not respond to the presence of trash files by indicating full or empty status.

I tried to resolve this by 1) removing the trash icon from desktop visibility through gconf-editor then 2) altering the icon them then 3) replacing the icon on the desktop with gconf-editor. It did not work.

The trash icon will not work on the desktop or within a panel.

I'm talking about the trash icon (which you can make appear on the desktop using the gconf-editor). I only mentioned this because I tried to use the configuration editor to resolve my issue...but it didn't work.

I have tried everything but once you change the icon manually (not using a wholesale icon change with the Appearance Preferences) it is impossible to get it to work correctly afterward. I now cannot change the trash icon by changing the icon theme nor will the trash icon change to show full or empty status.

Apparrently that's a problem with gvfsd-trash.

To reproduce the bug, just simply empty the folder and you could (perhaps) see the icon didn't changed, to fix the bug manually you could kill all process of gvfsd-trash, kill nautilus to refresh the desktop and then it's fixed. But doesn't work for the applet.
