Bug Description

I am using 9.04 Jaunty Jackrabbit.

During installation of ubuntu, I set the 'automatically login' option for my one user account. It's still set in the login preferences, but I am no longer automatically logged in. It worked fine for a couple of bootups, but now I get the usual gdm login screen to type in username and password.

For my case, automatic login never work. It only give me a blank screen, not even gdm login screen. I have tried manually edited /etc/gdm/gdm.conf but it did not work as well. I have to edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom to remove automatic login in order to get gdm login screen.

Additional information, I did clean install using netinstall, expert mode as the default mode give me blank screen.

Same issue here, enabling automatic login or timed login through gdmsetup gives me a blank screen after booting. Restarting X brings me back to the gdm login screen, and I can login from there.

There seems to be two different problems described here:
1. Automatic login doesn't work, you see the normal login screen
2. Automatic login cause blank screen and restarting X is the only way out.

Let's keep this report to track problem 1, if you are one of the users having problem 2 can you, if you still have those problems with a up to date system, please file a new bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+filebug

Note to gdm maintainers: This report is almost a year old, the reporter or commenter's may not be monitoring this report for changes any longer.

I have this problem in Mythbuntu 9.10. It seems to only occur after a crash or power failure, however. If, after it comes back up, I power down the system and then power it back up, the auto-login seems to start working again. If I just let the system reboot, however, it goes to the login screen. Since I am running this system as a MythTV Front End (i.e. Home theater PC with the keyboard across the room) it is very annoying when it happens. I usually control the system via VNC from my laptop, but X11 has to be running to use VNC. If I connect to the system via SSH and issue a reboot command (in other words, reboot it a second time after it rebooted due to the crash), it seems to be random chance whether it will auto-login after the reboot or not.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.
