Bug Description

My PC is an old one : amd k6 200 with an old ATI graphical card : rage. So I decided to install Xubuntu jaunty on it (because it should be faster), and I used EXT4 partition system. From boot to login, the speed is correct, but from login to XFCE desktop it is horribly slow. The desktop is only displayed after at least 2 minutes. The screen resolution is very high (1600x1200 for a 17" screen!!).
So I set it to 1024x768 using "Display" and the "settings editor" too. But as soon as I reboot the PC, the screen resolution come back to 1600x1200 though it remains set as 1024x768 in the settings editor (but not in the Display application). So there is a difference between the resolution set in Display and in the settings editor. That's weird.
1) What is the origin of this screen resolution issue? (I want it to stay set as 1024x768)
2) Why is it so slow to display the desktop after login?
Do you think it is because of the graphical card ? Then why is it always said that Xubuntu is convenient for OLD PC's and it does not work with OLD graphical cards (from old PC's) ? That is not consistent.
Any help for this issues ?
Thanks in advance
Sam

I can confirm this bug. My PC is a Celeron 366, integrated ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 1X. I upgraded from xubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 using the Update Manager. My filesystem is ext3.

- The time between entering my user name/password to displaying the desktop takes a noticeably long time now, about 50 seconds for me. This occurs on every login, not just the first login after boot.

- The screen resolution defaults back to the highest resolution and highest refresh rate, in my case 1152x864, 75 Mhz. This is the highest setting as displayed by the command "xrandr". This occurs on every login, not just the first login after boot.

- Additional "slowness" issue: The first time you click the "log out button", a gray half-transparent window covers the whole screen, which is OK. But it takes about 4 seconds for the logout dialog to be shown. If you cancel the logout dialog and click the log out button again, the logout dialog is shown immediately. I think this was faster in 8.10, because I never took notice of a logout delay until I upgraded. This occurs on every login, not just the first login after boot.

Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Thanks for reporting these issues. In the future, please file a separate bug report for each issue. Yes, the display issues are due to your graphics card. However, the slowness is a duplicate of bug 363664.
