Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Since I've updated to 9.04, I'm no longer able to mirror my desktop to an external monitor. After setting up the mirror and clicking on apply, the Display Manager reports an error 'Could not apply the selected configuration - Method invoked for ApplyConfiguration returned FALSE but did not set error'.

Restarting x server does not help. I experience the same bug on two different laptops (both using Intel graphics).

Laptop1:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
Laptop2:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Oddly enough every once in a while mirroring seems to work. I was just able to set it up correctly - only to for it to fail again the next time I tried. I gave it a couple more shots and they all failed.

I was able to repeat this earlier but currently with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.2.

This has never occured to me when using xrandr from command line.

I confirm that this is an issue with the Display settings GUI dialog. xrandr from the command line works without any glitches.

The Display settings GUI dialog is the program gnome-display-properties, which is part of the gnome-control-center binary and source packages. I have therefore added gnome-control-center to this bug.

For completeness and to help people not familiar with xrandr work around this bug, could you state the exact xrandr command the achieves the desired outcome?

Mark34 (mark34) wrote :

In my case that's

xrandr --output VGA --auto --left-of LVDS //extends desktop to external monitor:
xrandr --output VGA --off --output LVDS --auto // switches back to laptop display only:

We have a laptop here with a Intel 915 that gives the same message. Attempting to use Xrandr just results in a segmentation fault if the monitor is plugged in.

Stephen, please file a new bug report for your problem. Since you get a segmentation fault, it should be possible to get a backtrace. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing .

I'll try to get a backtrace as soon as possible.

I'd just thought I'd mention though that it turns out that this defect (and the segfault in Xrandr) only happens on one monitor I have - I tried another (newer) monitor and two projectors and it worked fine there.

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

I have the same problem as initially described, however I noticed that my Fn-F7 key works (did not work in previous Ubuntu releases) so this issue is currently solved for me. I hope this helps some of you as a temporary solution.

@green-delarue-berlin, your issue really should be handled as a separate bug report. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for tips on creating bug reports.

I have this bug on a Dell E6400 with the same graphics chip as mentioned above from Intel. I think this may be a duplicate of bug 316887.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/316887

For me xrandr seems to work, thought he GUI does not. Here is the xrandr command for those who need a work around.

$ xrandr --output LVDS --auto --output VGA --auto --same-as LVD

Best regards,

Rob

One more note:

After doing the xrandr command just above, the GUI seems to work just fine to change the resolution of the monitors, but it won't then allow you to switch off the second monitor.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.
