Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Jaunty 9.04 up to date
ATI Radeon 9200 RV280 + Hyundai L70S+
Up to Feisty, I had no problem with my system : 3D effect without problem.
From Gutsy up to Intrepid, I had some problems (messy video when booting on livecd, then after xorg modification, no "normal" effect and so no 3D ...). Now, with Jaunty, I can correctly install Ubuntu with a correct video but I can't activate "normal" video effect, the system refuses it and return to "no effect".
Old bugs filed :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313262 with many infos concerning my configuration

Any hope to have GoogleEarth back on my PC ? ;-)

Regards,
Denis

Hi denis-romand-aliceadsl,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Hello Bryce,

Please find attached the files you requested. Hope this may help !

Regards,

Denis

note 1 : xorg.conf is the standard one, not modified, and quite "empty" now as compared to the Feisty version !
note 2 : the L70S+ monitor is now displayed as IQT in System > Preference > Display (or Monitor ?)

Searching on the web, I found another uBuntu bug that gave me a solution :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/354677

Just add Option "BusType" "PCI" to xorg.conf ... and I have now "normal" visual effect !

Contents of my current xorg.conf (comments removed) :
Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "BusType" "PCI" <= added line..............
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
 Monitor "Configured Monitor"
 Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

I will now try Google Earth and compiz-manager ...

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you
reported?

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908/+listing-archive-extra

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.

Hello Bryce,
My old PC has been replaced and I can't perform any test for the 9200SE ATI board. So you may close this bug if you want.

I may test your solution for a Radeon™ HD 3200 Graphics, integrated in a AMD 780G if you need it. I have no visual effect in standard but I can get them when using the ATI driver, but this may not be related to this bug !

Best regards,

Denis

Since the hardware is no longer available for doing troubleshooting with, we'll close the bug for now. However please feel free to reopen if you or anyone else has the same HW and can reproduce this issue using the latest development version of Ubuntu and is willing to do some troubleshooting with it.

Testing of the HD 3200 would be welcome, although we do not yet have the final -fglrx in place so you may want to wait for that (it's should be coming soonish.)

I have ATI Radeon 9200SE running now on 9.10 Karmic Koala RC. I experienced significant performance drop comparing to Intrepid or Jaunty with proprietary driver which is not offered in Karmic Koala. I believe acceleration is not working with default Karmic driver. Simple gear test gives about 400 FPS only. I am ready to perform any additional test or put here any listing or screen shot if necessary.

I reopened this issue as Bryce Harrington call for it in previous post. Now I am facing following situation:
(1) Default Karmic Koala driver is not working properly on my desktop.
(2) My children have been asking "Why Supertux is not running? Why does Google Earth crash? When will be our computer fixed?"
(3) I would like to help resolve this issue but there is no response to my report for several days.

What should I do? Should I wait further for any response here? Should I give up it and install another driver? Which? How? Should I go back to 9.04 which was working fine? Please, tell me.

I understand it may not be a top priority to resolve it. I am OK with it. Just let me know.

I am ati 9250 user and I have "stable" desktop With out DRI... Great. I don't understand, why is in Karmic Koala xserver, mesa etc.. with this bug! Users with old hardware are not important? Such as Intel user 6 month ago... I am wery angry and sad.
Problem with ati 9200/9250 were reports on launchpad minimal 2 month before KK release...

> Karel Marik: "Why Supertux is not running?" because I use very poor operating system...

I have an old Radeon 9200 video card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] [1002:5960] (rev 01)

I posted my xorg.conf configuration here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8263824#post8263824

it works perfectly for me, and graphics performance seem better than in Jaunty
