Bug Description

Binary package hint: gedit

Save works fine,
however when I click on save as from the file menu nothing happens for a while, the screen then goes dim, and finally it works and I can save as.
I am using ubuntu 8.04.
I expected the save as to work much more quickly and I didn't expect the screen to dim.

do you have any non standard option? do you save the file in a directory with lot of files or a non local directory?

I experience the same symptoms as Ivan Pullen.

To reproduce bug:
1. open gedit
2. write text [I wrote standard ASCII characters] in the new file.
3. go to top menu and select save as.

- what happens: Several seconds (about 15 or so) passes during gedit is unrepsonsive and the program is 'dimmed' until for the folder box (I don't know the correct term) is displayed. The folder box lists the folder in which contains that last modified file that gedit saved (a local directory, in a home subfolder).

Once the folder box appears and the user clicks on save within this folder box, gedit works normally.

I ran a backtrace, following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace#generation
and have attached gdb's output.

apt-cache policy gedit out is:

gedit:
  Installed: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.26.1-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I am running 9.04 - jaunty jackalope. I never experienced this bug in 8.10 [intrepid].

Same problem here -- have found gedit to be very slow after an upgrade to Jaunty.

Save As - takes a long time for the dialog box to appear, screen dims.

Additionally, gedit chokes on some larger (but not huge) files. For example, a 200kB sql file (a dump if a phpbb3 forum) routinely hangs gedit when scrolling past a particular line each time.

The primary text editor becoming unreliable is hugely important, IMO -- not sure why this is marked as "Low Importance". The original reporter has added a backtrace as requested, and I will add more when I can reproduce.

Same problem here. 9.04 Jaunty jackalope, 64-bits. Started a couple of days ago. However, not only GEdit is affected, also Gthumb, Cheese and some others Gnome applications. (It seems KDE apps are not affected in my system.) The CPU load is low, the process listing don't show anything eating CPU time, the network traffic is low and everything else is responsive and fast. I have some Samba shares mounted but I can browse them without problems before, after and while waiting for the file chooser dialog.

If I reboot, it takes a while before happening again.

The only extra packages I have installed recently are Cheese (the webcam capture program), Tracker (the indexer), and the network-manager plugins for openvpn, pptp and vpnc (network-manager-openvpn, network-manager-pptp, network-manager-vpnc).

I have just solved this problem (at least in my computer, other users may try this out).

It seems it was a problem with Tracker. I just killed the tracker-indexer and trackerd processes and the file chooser dialog was working as fast as usual again. I ended up uninstalling Tracker. This solution was found in an older bug report (bug #229539). I think this bug is a duplicate of that one.

I think Tracker is not installed by default in Jaunty, but it was in Hardy, so maybe those who are using Hardy or upgraded to Jaunty by patching Hardy or those who (like me) installed Tracker manually may found this problem.

MV

I have this this problem with the Save As dialogue box with jaunty, and also had it with intrepid.

It occurs on many programs, including gedit, firefox, and openoffice.

I do not have tracker installed.

The dialog box opens and stays blank for about five seconds, then the screen dims for about one second, and finally the contests of the box appear.

I was having this issue as well, whenever I would open a file open/save dialog box the program that called for the box would hang, fade to gray, hang for a few more seconds, then launch the box. Seems it was a tracker-indexer issue for me as well. I killed the tracker-indexer process and everything resumed back to normal.

Can anyone confirm that this bug still exists on Lucid? I can not reproduce it, if anyone can, I'll forward it upstream.
