Bug Description

Hi,

I have a
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series]

graphics card, but can't find a driver with sufficient support in jaunty.

fglrx denies service because it does not support this card

radeonhd works but slow. It's good for regular work but when trying to display videos there are too many dropped frames.

ATI seems to have put their driver into a 'legacy driver':
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.7&lang=English

Maybe ubuntu could adopt this?

regards

To be more precise:

Video decoding works normaly (but with occupying one core of the dual core cpu with almost 100%) if the video is displayed unscaled. As soon as the picture is scaled (esp. full screen) it gets extremely slow. Looks as if the rendering is not made by hardware but software.

The default driver is xserver-xorg-video-ati. Does it work better? If not, please file a bug against that package, using "ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati".

Hi hadmut,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

xorg.conf:

I've tried different drivers, such as radeonhd and fglrx.

I've forced the resolution into 1440x900, since the computer is connected via HDMI to a flat panel TV, which has a physical resolution of 1440x900, but always lists these resolutions for multimedia compatibility:

% xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 1680 x 1050
default connected 1680x1050+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1680x1050 60.0*
   1400x1050 60.0
   1280x1024 60.0
   1440x900 60.0
   1280x960 60.0
   1360x768 60.0
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.0 56.0
   640x480 60.0

which makes xorg choose a wrong resolution (being interpolated) by the TV.

As I said in comment 2, the default driver which we support for this card is the "ati" driver. So please remove your xorg.conf and attach the Xorg.0.log that you get.

OK,

after upgrading the ati driver seems to work well with the card (which definitely was not the case the days before I've opened the bug, because the ati driver is where I started to solve problems.

However, the ati driver does not seem to support the HDMI audio. An HDMI audio device appears, but does not work. The radeon and radeonhd drivers did not work either with audio, but at least I found hints in forums that the latest radeonhd driver from ATI's web site was what is needed to get HDMI sound working.

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
