after playing a bit around I found a solution:
- start ubuntu in recovery mode (press esc at startup and choose from menu)
-scroll all the way down and choose "fix graphic problems"
-start normally

that did it for me.

cheers
Mark

I am also finding the same problem. I tried "fix graphic problems" also. It did not work. In gxine only text captions are visible when I play movies. Only sound is heard. Picture does not appear. Totem closes immediately.
