Distorted Sound in Movie Files

System is Dell Studio 1735 Laptop

Movie Player is'

Totem Movie Player 2.26.1
Movie Player using GStreamer 0.10.22

Just updated from 8.10 to 9.04 and found that the audio in some AVI movie files was distorted.

All audio playback was fine on 8.10

Just by chance, I checked the properties of the files and found that the audio that always sounds normal is;

Codec: MPEG 1 Audio, Layer 3 (MP3)
Channels: Stereo
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bit Rate: 128 kbps

Distorted files are similar except the Bit Rate is not 128 kbps;

IE..

Codec: MPEG 1 Audio, Layer 3 (MP3)
Channels: Stereo
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bit Rate: 160kbps

The video is unaffected.

When playing the same file with "vlc" or "smplayer" the sound is clean, the problem just happens in totem.

I just want to confirm that I too have the same problem with some, but not all, AVI files. I haven't noticed any problems with MP3 files. I thought that this might have been a problem with my audio device drivers, but "vlc" works fine, just as Najmudin reported. This could be related to bug #100109.

... oh and I just wanted to add that I never witnessed these problems in Gutsy. I never tried Hardy. I know at least one of the files I'm having a problem with in Jaunty I had around in Gutsy and did not notice any problem until using the new machine that is running Jaunty. In case it matters, my Gutsy machine had an old SoundBlaster Live! PCI card while the new PC is using an onboard VIA audio device. I need to emphasize though that this is only a problem with certain AVI files and other sounds produced within Ubuntu seem normal.

Also try to use the latest release fo ubuntu.

I believe that I did manage to get this fixed in Jaunty. Unfortunately, I don't remember what I did. In any case, I upgraded to Karmic Koala in early November, and audio has not been a problem at all for Karmic. I have, however, noticed performance problems in video playback, but that's a separate issue.
