Bug Description

My hardware is ASUS X58L laptop. The wireless chip is Atheros AR928X. When resuming from suspend, wireless stops working. Installing linux-backports-modules-jaunty didn't help. Even doing rmmod ath9k followed by modprobe ath9k doesn't help. That's on 64bit Jaunty, but the problem was also present on 64bit Intrepid.

I am attaching dmesg output after resuming.

I have an update on my situation.

This laptop has a button with a LED indicator to disable wireless. Under Vista, it's disabled by default, so you actually have to press it every time you boot to get a wireless connection. It's Vista Business BTW. Under linux, the LED is off by default, but the wireless connection still works (until you suspend). Pressing this button actually disables the wireless connection. The LED is still off, the GUI doesn't notice anything, but network packets stop coming. Pressing it again brings the connection back to life, and the LED is now on.

What happens after resuming from suspend, is:
1. If suspend hapenned when the LED was off, which includes the initial state, the button stops working after resume. The LED is always off, there is no wireless connection, and even rmmod + modprobe doesn't help.
2. If suspend hapenned when the LED was on, it's still on after resume, the button turns it on and off as expected, the wireless doesn't work though. However, in this case doing rmmod + modprobe actually brings the connection back to life.

Linux kernel 2.6.33-rc3 has just been released. The release notes at http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/1/5/512 include the following comment:

ath9k: fix suspend by waking device prior to stop

Based on past kernel releases I would expect between 3 and 5 more RC's (at approximately 1-week intervals) until 2.6.33 final. Then we just need someone to make a PPA for Karmic, followed later by a PPA for Lucid when it is released.

This particular problem was gone for some time already.
ath9k driver is still very buggy though. I can't test those new kernels since I've moved to Fedora, but it's a safe bet to assume it's still buggy, because it's been buggy forever.
