Bug Description

The 2.6.15 AMD64 kernel fails to boot on ASUS A6Km laptop when an USB mouse is connected. The boot hangs on the following line:

ACPI: setting ELCR to 0200 (from 0c30)

This has been tested with two different brand mice. Both of them work fine when connected to a running system, or even a booting system which has passed the line above.

Booting with noapic or does not help. Turning ACPI off completely (acpi=off) does, so this might be an ACPI bug.

This is the dmesg from a booted system.

Does booting with nousb also help?

And do you have legacy USB turned on in your BIOS?

Well, strange enough booting with nousb does not help. Also this laptop has a very basic BIOS and there's only an option for turning USB on/off.

I did a bit more testing and apparently Fedora Core 5, OpenSuse 10.1 beta 8 and FreeBSD 6.1 beta 4 have the same problem. Windows XP boots work fine with an USB mouse connected.

Ok, this is indeed a known kernel bug and nothing Ubuntu specific. It is caused most likely by a buggy BIOS.

Is there a chance there is an updated BIOS for your system, or possibly a DSDT replacement?

It seems that only the initial BIOS release (202AS) works without USB problems. All the later BIOS releases have this annoying mouse bug and I'm not sure ASUS will ever bother to fix it.

So I guess this bug can be marked as resolved?

Since this is a BIOS bug, there isn't much to be done about it in Ubuntu. Upstream is aware of the problem.
