Bug Description

I see artifacts in font rendering, all involving the letter f. See screenshots.

The font is Bitstream Vera Sans.

Note: I enabled the autohinter (by default Ubuntu uses the bytecode interpreter, which makes fonts really ugly IMHO).

I forgot to mention I use Dapper.

The problem seems caused by wrong spacing between the letters.

I've seen problems like this in the autohinter for years. No one has any real incentive to fix it because no major distro can ship it on by default...

Sitsofe, you are confusing things a little. The autohinter is patent-free technology, and most major distros ship with it by default (suse, fedora, mandriva). Ubuntu and debian ship with the bytecode interpreter, which is covered by an apple patent and is also worse IMHO. :-)

That said, the problem I described happens with the autohinter (and it may or may not happen with the bytecode interpreter, I don't know), but it is very recent: I did not have any problem at all with breezy.
