Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

After upgrading to Jaunty on two machines, when new package updates are available, instead of the usual notification icon in the tray appearing, Update Manager just starts up, and minimizes itself to the taskbar.
When running apt-get, the icon used to appear in grey in the tray. Not anymore.

update-notifier process is running, and when I put it in debug mode (--debug-inotify) it does notice when apt-get is run, but that's it, the icon does not appear.

I'm not sure, but this might be the new behavior of Update Manager. I noticed the change too, assumed it was intentional.

If it was intentional, it's a pretty bad move, IMHO ;) I always liked how update-manager wasn't intrusive when new updates were available, that icon in the tray was just perfect, and it worked really well, too.

Same, at least it could've bought up a quick notification to tell you updates were available and disappeared again. Now it doesn't appear at all!

I'm running into this problem as well. I upgraded my install from Intrepid and now I don't have no update-manager icon (in notification tray), nor the icon for when a package manager is running.

If you read through the linked bug you will find it is possible to
reenable this icon should you wish to.

What good is it to reenable the icon? The question is not about just getting that pretty orange icon back, but getting the old behavoir back.

Right now, the icon is visible only when update -manager is manually started.

Its been a few days and i havent seen the icon reappear on its own.

This sucks.Keep the new notify osd its cool but dont remove things which were nice and efficient.

Yes, it completely restores the old behavior as well. If you had just
read a little or tried it you would know :)
