FYI: as per the error message, I read the /usr/share/doc/libxml-sax-perl/README.Debian.gz file, which included code to uninstall the locally installed XML::SAX module. After this uninstallation. upgrading the package worked seamlessly.

Perhaps the solution might be to ask the user how to deal with the conflicting versions of the module.
