Hello!
I've got the same error message, it appears after upgrade Ubuntu from 8.10 till 9.04.

Additionally, Synaptic and other pkg managers not working (they show some errors after they were launched).

In recovery mode i can upgrade packages, but I see errors like "Can't open openpty(). Not mounted?" (it's not quite correct message).

Additionally, when launched "netroot" mode in recovery, wifi interfaces try to get IP over DHCP, but in NetworkManager setting up static IP addresses.

Best regards, PA.
