Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The LCD brightness stopped to work correctly since I've upgraded to 9.04 Jaunty. It works fine in MacOSX 10.4.

My model is Macbook1,1 and brightness worked perfectly in 8.10 Intrepid.

At 100% the display brightness goes 100%:
decreasing the brightness level by 1, the display goes 0% (no light)
decreasing the brightness level by 1, nothing changes
decreasing the brightness level by 1, nothing changes
decreasing the brightness level by 1, nothing changes
decreasing the brightness level by 1, nothing changes
decreasing the brightness level by 1, the display goes around 50-80% (not sure) ...
decreasing the brightness level by 1, the display goes around 20-30% (not sure) ...
decreasing the brightness level by 1, the display goes around 30-40% (not sure) ...

the display brightness is completely different if I increase the brightness.

So the behaviour is kind of erratic and useless... I've tried both gnome-brightness-applet, gnome-power-manager and the brightness function keys; it's the same erratic behaviour.

Please tell me if you need more info.

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

Upgraded and writing this from karmic alpha-2; I could not report before
because there are so many bugs and issues which make this Macbook1,1
unusable in Ubuntu [from intermitent WiFi up to X11 hanging because the
new KMS :(]...

The good news is that this bug is almost resolved: in Mac OS X 10.4
there are 17 levels of brightness including no light; in Ubuntu there
are 21 levels of which the two brightest seems to be the same (repeated:
same brightness) and the two darkest seems to be the same (repeated: no
light); But the feeling and user experience is the expected: no random
jumps of light and decreasing/increasing the brightness works as
expected.

If this works the same in the final karmic release, I would consider
this bug closed.

Thanks,
