same problem here, except that I have clean install of Ubuntu 9.04. Whatever I try to install, Synapric says that post-installation script of sun-java6-jdk failed. If I try to remove jdk package, it fails too, with message: "E: sun-java6-jdk: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

I got the same problem, but I have a clean install of Ubuntu 9.04 64 bits.
My system is in Brazillian Portuguese (pt_BR), and on an ext4 filesystem.

The error message (in portuguese) translate to something like: "update-alternatives: error or end of file reading /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/HtmlConverter for update_mode".

I checked the content of the file /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/HtmlConverter and it is empty.

I got that error even when trying to remove the sun-java6-jdk package, preventing me from removing it.
