Bug Description

Binary package hint: glest

I tried playing Glest on my Ubuntu 8.10, and I am sorry to say that the port is somewhat broken. After playing for a while, the game (which begins full screen) becomes a window (see attachment), and playing becomes a little tougher.

I did the following to get it back to full screen- I minimised the window and then Alt-TAB. That got me back into full-screen. Sometimes after a while it may go back to full screen all by itself.

Twice it made my computer crash.

Once because I tried closing the program from the OS without exiting from within the game. The sound server did not leave and kept creating this annoying sound.

And on the other instance the screen froze while I was playing, and I had to press power button to get my machine out of it.

Once while I was playing all of a sudden the game crashed, and I was back at the Ubuntu login window.

It's an awesome game, and probably one of the best games available for Linux. It will be nice if these could be fixed. Thank you very much for the game.

I'm pretty sure this isn't a bug in Glest, but in your graphics
driver, window manager or wherever else.

Do you know who should be notified about that?

Not really.

The first thing you could do is, if you're using Compiz, try switching
to Metacity before you play (by pressing Alt+F2 and writing "metacity
--replace" into the "Run" dialogue which will pop up). Does it still
happen without Compiz?

(I saw your comment only now.)

I just upgraded to 9.04. Now the program doesn't even start. When run from terminal, I get the following error:

Exception: Error accessing value: AutoTest in: glest.ini
Value not found in propertyMap: AutoTest, loaded from: glest.ini

I tried doing what you said- changed to metacity, but with the same results and the same error message.

This may as well be the screensaver or other screen power save
features. Can you please try disabling them? If this is indeed the
problem I'll see what I can do (setting up an inhibit or whatever).

I am sorry that I can't test that now. I have upgraded to 9.04 and now I have a new set of problems.

Hi,

I had the same problem. I found the answer here: http://glest.org/glest_board/index.php?action=printpage;topic=4139.0

All you have to do is edit ~/.glest/glest.ini and add a line with "AutoTest=0"

Tried. That. It works now. I have to check if it still crashes, though.

After I added the line AutoTest=0 to the file mentioned (~/.glest/glest.ini) and after that the problem did not repeat.

I'm closing this bug as the latest Glest versions already have "AutoTest=0" in the configuration file by default. Thanks.
