Bug Description

$ uname -a
Linux marix 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
$ cvs -z3 -d <email address hidden> co -P src
[...]

I guess, ext4 freezed because too many (not synced) small files are created.

I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty. After installing it and using for one week, Ubuntu started to freeze just 10 minutes after boot. Then I found, that it's related with my PHP script, that creates 312 small files, with content similar to this:

-----8<-----
<?php // a:11:{s:3:"fid";s:4:"3495";s:10:"parent_fid";s:4:"3193";s:10:"linked_fid";s:1:"0";s:5:"title";s:14:"Kiti skelbimai";s:5:"image";s:1:"0";s:7:"imgname";N;s:7:"a_count";N;s:5:"order";s:1:"8";s:4:"type";s:5:"front";s:8:"front_id";s:4:"3495";s:9:"folder_id";s:1:"0";}
----->8-----

3 of 5 times, when I try to generate these small files, Ubuntu freezes.

 $ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 9.04 \n \l

 $ uname -a
Linux sirex-laptop 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

 $ mount | grep ext4
/dev/sda1 on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro)
/dev/sda3 on /home type ext4 (rw,relatime)

Hi Mathias-Christian,

Are you still using an ext4 filesystem? If so, do you still see this issue with the latest 2.6.28-15.48 Jaunty kernel? If so, I've backported some additional ext4 related patches and put some test kernels at:

http://people.canonical.com/~ogasawara/ext4-jaunty/

There is currently an amd64 test kernel there but I'll be adding i386 once it finishes building. Please let us know your results if you are able to test. Thanks.
