Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

I opened this document: http://www.two-sdg.demon.co.uk/curbralan/papers/IfIHadAHammer.pdf in evince, and it looked horrible and hard to read. As far as I can tell, the cause is the PDFs wish to use fonts (AGaramond) that aren't installed in my system. Evince substitutes the fonts so I see something other than a blank page, which is good, but since the metrics of the new font don't match the missing font, the text looks horrible.

I think it would be nice of Evince to notify me (unobtrusively, by a yellow bar above the document, with a close button on the right, just like Firefox does these days) that some of the fonts weren't available so the document may not display properly.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: evince 2.26.0-0ubuntu1
ProcEnviron:
 LC_CTYPE=lt_LT.UTF-8
 PATH=(custom, user)
 LANG=lt_LT.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: evince
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic i686

I am having the same problem on Ubuntu lucid with documents downloaded from
http://jpr.sagepub.com/content/40/2/213.abstract

In the properties window, the following fonts are listed:
Helvetica
Helvetica-Oblique
Helvetica-Bold
Helvetica-BoldOblique
AGaramond-Semibold
AGaramond-Regular
AGaramond-Italic
Courier
AGaramond-SemiboldItalic

All Type 1 and Not embedded

The text is not readable without getting headaches because just as in the example from the bug description, the word-boundaries are not recognizable, the letters shift heavily to left and right seemingly at random...
Xpdf for example renders the same file on the same computer in a readable fashion.
