Inkscape doesn't support the "font-variant" property

Inkscape (version 0.46-2ubuntu2) does not support the "font-variant" property (http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/text.html#FontVariantProperty). The "Text and Font" dialog doesn't allow setting it and if it is entered manually (using Inkscape's XML Editor), it does not affect the font.

"font-variant" support still doesn't work with the latest dev builds, and the roadmap doesn't plan anything about it.
As this is in the SVG specification, we'll probably have to implement it.
Anyway, best practice (moreover, it's a good workaround) should be to use a small-caps version of your font (if any) instead of using "font-variant".

Could any of upstream developers at least outline the implementation plan for this feature? This is something I would love to see in Inkscape, I might try to hack on it if no one else is working in this direction at the moment.

When has there last been any action on this? It looks like it's been missing for four years and still hasn't been implemented. I'm no expert in Inkscape's codebase, but how simple would this be to implement and test?
