Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

Release: 9.04

tiris@sebastian:~$ sudo apt-cache policy network-manager-vpnc

I imported a cisco pcf file via the gui. Everythink works as long as I do no try to connect to the network. When I do, the errormessage is : VPN connection error: VPN connection could not be established because there are no valid secrets.

I tried vpnc directly via the konsole and it works, so the bug has to be somewhere in the network manager. I also tried the clear group password provided by my university, but no change, still the group secret is not recognized.

I've been able to reproduce this issue, but it has nothing to do with the .pcf import
With the same settings on network-manager-vpnc:
On Ubuntu 8.10 everything is fine
On Ubuntu 9.04 RC : using the nm-applet result in the same error (VPN connection error: VPN connection could not be established because there are no valid secrets.)
and thus, using "sudo vpnc" with the very same parameters works fine.

Today I tried to connect again and it worked. There were no patches or anything installed (at least I did not enter my password), and it works now without a change. Possibly you need to restart to get it working. Could you also try this Timothee?

I confirm, a restart is needed, it works after this, without any update.

I too had this problem and can confirm it is fixed by a restart.

Marking invalid.

How is this invalid, if you have to do a restart without being told? it worked without any problems in 8.10 and now it does not like it's supposed to. If you are required to restart, you should at least get a hint for that, let alone enabling it to work without a restart.

Clearly not invalid! I have this problem now in latest lucid updates

I'm also seeing this in the latest lucid updates. vpnc works fine standalone but fails via network manager. Worked in 9.04

I am seeing this bug in the 10.4 official release. It started for me after I added network-manager-openvpn-gnome. Why this OpenVPN package is affecting VPNC tunnels, I can only guess.

There is not information in this bug report to be able to debug this issue. I also think the original problem has been corrected for a little while: if you try a Natty Live CD session, install network-manager-vpnc and import a .pcf file, the group password should now be imported.

Any other issues (e.g. missing secrets error) is due to the fact that Network Manager needs to be restarted after installing the vpnc plugin. Past that no further restarts should be necessary.

As I believe the original reported issue has been resolved, I'll close this as Fix Released.

However, if you are still seeing issues, please don't hesitate to file a new bug against network-manager; using the following command:

ubuntu-bug network-manager

This will open a new bug and attach all the necessary debugging information so that we can find out the cause of the issue and for a developer to resolve it. Thanks in advance!
