Bug Description

Since we use ALSA with dmix, it would be much better for libsdl1.2debian to
depend on libsdl1.2debian-alsa. This affects lots of programs (mostly games).

Right, this is an oversight that we should have fixed way earlier.

I tested the alsa backend, it works fine. -oss does not work at all as long as
esd is running since it wants exclusive access to the sound card.

Changing the prefered dependency would promote libsdl1.2debian-alsa to main and
demote libsdl1.2debian-oss to universe. Matt, are you fine with that?

The other backends are promoted to main, so that installing another one is easy.
Because of the large number of depending packages, we don't want to switch the
default backend this close to a release.

We will do this in Dapper.

Tja... To bad we noticed this so late :(
for what is worth, i didn't notice any problems with -alsa...

I've been using the -alsa backend since switching to Breezy to take advantage of
dmix, and have not encountered any issues with SDL applications. If the default
backend will not be changed for Breezy, could this issue at least be highlighted
in the release notes so that there is not a rash of bugs generated from people
unable to use sounds with SDL applications while running ESD?

Fixed package prepared for Dapper:

   * debian/control: Depend on -alsa, not -oss by default to play nice with
     other audio applications. (Ubuntu #16444)
