Update available balloon pops up over xscreensaver

If updates become available while a screensaver is running the little balloon
will come up on top of the screensaver. Seems not right.

What version of notification-daemon do you use? Is it a up-to-date breezy? what
screensaver? gnome-screensaver? xscreensaver?

This problem should have been fixed with the upload of notification-daemon:
notification-daemon (0.2.1-0ubuntu12) breezy; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/07_no_notification_on_screensaver.patch:
    - don't show the notification if another window is in fullscreen-mode
      (e.g. screensaver, media-player) (ubuntu #14944, #15783)

please check if you run this version (and if notification-daemon was restarted
since that version was installed. a simple killall notification-daemon will do)

OH, Your right. This happened like last night and I didn't get to file until
today. I now have the newest daemon and everything is AOK. thanks.

OH! it did it again, i'll hit reopen bug and hope you see it.

According to synaptic I have notification-daemon 0.2.1-ubuntu12 installed.I'm
using gnome-screensaver, and the particular saver is called 'substrate'.

I havent tried to replicate this yet, but heres what i did...

*log in, not touch mouse at all

thats all, lol . I glanced over and there was the baloon.

Thanks for this bugreport.

I can reproduce the problem here. It seems like xscreensaver/gnome-screensaver
makes all windows disappear from the wnck_screen_get_windows(), it returns a
empty list. So it dosn't detect that the screensaver is runing. Interesstingly
that behaviour didn't show when the screen is saved with
"gnome-screensaver-command --activate". That's why I didn't detected it in my
initial tests.

For gnome-screensaver this problem should be fixed with the recent upload of
notification-daemon 0.2.1-0ubuntu13.

xscreensaver is unfortunately a lot harder:

Is this a security issue? Does the popup actually allow you to take some
action, or is it merely displayed?

The popup is only displayed, xscreensaver will not allow the mouse to leave the
unlock dialog. So it's not possible to actually click on the notification (and
the notification will go away after 60s). So it's "only" ugly.

gnome-screensaver correctly set the _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN property for it's
fullscreen window and notification-daemon skips displaying the notification in
that case. xscreensaver does not set this property and this is a bug IMHO.

This is no longer a issue in dapper because we use gnome-screensaver. It dosn't pop over it.
