The appropriate files have been uploaded and are waiting for approval. They will go through rosetta and end up in the first batch of language-pack updates for jaunty.

kde-l10n-* accepted into jaunty. Too bad that final langpacks were already uploaded.

Setting to Fix Released. I added them manually to the language-pack-kde-xx-base packages.

When do we get the language-pack updates? The .desktop-files are still untranslated (I use the German language pack), but they were translated before all translation strings were removed in the .desktop files.

I also have done all the updates, but the translations are still not working. I used the German language. Why was this bug set to Fix Released several times although the problem is still there?

This is definitiely not fixed. At least not for the german language pack as other users reported, too.

Is there no way to by-pass Rosetta or get this working in some way?

Maybe it's a problem in distributing the packages onto the update mirror servers. I just installed Jaunty off a daily CD image within VirtualBox (in German) and this specific problem in definitely gone.
There are a few untranslated panes here and there, but those have nothing to do with .desktop files. Too bad Jonathan Riddell just worked around the problem by manually uploading the .desktop files. That means by 9.10 we'll have the same problem all over again, because the frigging import script is still faulty...

As Matthias Klumpp said in another bug (bug #355814, is this a duplicate?) the translations are (nearly) perfect after setting language to English and back again to German.

So the fix really seems to help but not without some glitches (need of re-setting language). Is this a bug, too?

"the frigging import script is still faulty" Nothing is faulty with the import, it was just too late.

@FriedChicken: You obviously have to log out and then back in, maybe even a full reboot is required (depending if the langpacks are kept in memory after plain logout or not).

Logging out/in or rebooting both don't help.

Is there some sort of text-cache that should be updated on language-pack-update but only gets updated after a language change?

I'm also living this problem in two different pc, Mexican Spanish, fully updated, nothing from ppas, backports, or any other external repos involving kde. I created a new user in one of them, and this new user has translations fully updated and working.

I got back to my user, and translations are messed up, almost everything in spanish, but some topics still in english. I tried changing the language to english, rebooted, back to spanish, and the same problem... I removed spanish translations, rebooted, reinstalled and everything is the same.

I also think there's a user cache not being correctly updated.

I should have checked my system before posting... I installed sometime kde-l10n-es, and still had that trouble, but I forgot I removed it. I installed it and everything is working now, even without closing my session, just selecting english and then back to spanish.
