Bug Description

It seems there are some patches to use the nice circle character instead of '*'
as the invisible character in GtkEntry (this is the character when you type
passwords).

But wouldn't it be easier to just change the default invisible character in GTK?
We could avoid lots of patches and this would make things more consistent (since
there are still a lot of '*' in some softwares). It's easy to do: it's just a
matter of modifying one line in gtk_entry_init().

What do you think?

Do you have an idea on how that's handled by the different fonts ? There is a
bug open for gdm by example: http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=7566

Sébastien: this might indeed cause problems if the font does not have this
symbol. I'm not sure of the best way to deal with this.

attached patch replaces the images osd images with images from the theme, that way they are also in sync with i.e. the mixer applet. it also adds steps like the mixer applet to the volume icons.

I have a related problem where my font (Fontin) doesn't seem to work with GtkEntry password entry; now it only shows the Yen symbol. This all worked fine in Ubuntu 8.10
