Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

With Pidgin 2.5.5, when logging in to MSN it always pops up multiple windows that say "Friendly name changes too rapidly". This happens every time I login to MSN. I'm not trying to change my nickname or friendly name or anything, I'm just logging in and get this pop-up multiple times. After clicking off each pop-up, things seem to work normally.

There's been a fix released? When did that happen? I have the latest 2.5.5 which I got through the Pidgin PPA and this problem exists there.

Same here... and while it doesn't seem to otherwise affect my IM experience, it's still kinda annoying to see 5 warning windows pop up every time pidgin starts.

I just updated to the latest Pidgin that came through the PPA today, and this problem still exists.

Would it be possible to backport this patch for the time being, until 2.5.6 is released? This is a pretty bad regression for some users. In my case, I get ~15 windows upon signing in. Every time MSN disconnects and reconnects, I get those 15 windows appearing again, which I have to click away, or hold down Alt+C until they all disappear.

The relevant commits are highlighted in the upstream bug report. Perhaps their changes can be combined into a single patch. I'll try to do this later if possible.

Here's a debdiff. I've test built this and can confirm that it works.

the new 2.5.6 version is in karmic now, you can open a jaunty task if you think that's worth a SRU update and want to work on that though

It's also in the PPA if you want to upgrade to it while using Intrepid.

Upgrade your pidgin installation. Newer versions have fixed this.
