Bug Description

I tried installing Jaunty Beta, Desktop 32-bit version using graphical installation. I have an Intel Dual Core laptop, with Nvidia 8600GTM graphics.

Installation appeared to proceed fine, but failed at around 80% - I think the Xserver crashed, and the Ubuntu user was logged back in. Research indicated this could be caused by a migration-assistant bug in Ubiquity. Running Ubiquity from the command line with the "--no-migration-assistant" option allowed installation to get to 90%, but again X crashed - this time at the "Detect Hardware" stage. This leads me to believe it might be caused by Nvidia / XOrg1.6 incompatabilities.

Because Installation failed half way through, the hard drive was left in a non-working state - no operating system could boot since Grub was not properly installed. The only reversion mechanism was to use an old, working 8.10 installation disk to reinstate Grub.
