[VM800] 9.04 Screen resolution on Via Epia LN card is to low

Bug Description

Tried to install 9.04 on VIA Epia LN (Mini ITX Card) however it seams that the resolution is stuck to 640x480 or 800x600. At startup 800x600. This card should be able to display higher resolutions..
First tried on a LG Flatron L225WS acreen
Then on a Philips 220VM
Slightly different result with the latter one saying that there was no GDM configured...

The bug's still alive.
I own a GIGABYTE STA/STC Thin-Client pc on which I did a fresh install today, using grub with a netinstall kernel and new initrd.
Everything went fine, even grub2 install works properly, even with encrypted LVM - good job so far, thanx.

But after rebooting the fabolous resolution of 1600x1200 was shinked to 800x600 pixels with no way to get it fixed.
I tried to get the proprietary drivers from VIA but those guys can't even produce tar.gz archives which can be opened by the krippled koala.

A quick fix would be helpful.

Kind regards from Germany,
Steffen

(What the hell is this service gdm start/stop thing? /etc/init.d/gdm start/stop worked out fine for many, many years.
And if there's no need to change something, why is it done?)

Hi SMut.
please submit new bug report.

Please build/install the latest openchrome driver and enable debug mode.
The detail build instruction for Ubuntu/Debian is available at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

I installed the openchrome driver, just for testing (didn't enable debug, sorry) and got the same resolution, but it seemed to me a bit more sharp - but that's not what I wanted.
To get the system running in a way I can use it, I got those:
http://linux.via.com.tw/support/beginDownload.action?eleid=345&fid=646
It is a stable version of the 3D-GFX driver ans Harald Welte works now for VIA, so their drivers should work fine now.
So do this:
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg (only needes if you have no /etx/X11/xorg.conf yet)

tar xvf <filename>.tgz <-! It is not Gzipped!
sudo ./vinstall
The xorg.conf will be altered, but your previous one was renamed, so if anything goes wrong, open a text-shell and you can swap those two configuration files.
Just log out and log in and it should work fine, rebooting is not needed (VIA programmers should know that linux has no rebootive multitasking)

Kind regards,
Steffen

PS: The bug should't be closed or needs to be reopened, because the Openchrome driver does not work. But I think Harals Welte will do it soon.

If you tell me how to enable the debug mode, I will use the previous xorg.conf file an attach the log.

Hi, I attached the logfile now.
I will go back to the proprietary via drivers now.
Hope you find what's wrong, those lines don't look good to me:
(II) CHROME(0): ViaFirstCRTCModeValid
(II) CHROME(0): Not using default mode "1600x1200" (hsync out of range)
(II) CHROME(0): Not using default mode "800x600" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)
and there are many of them...
