When you load ASS or SSA file in avidemux, there is no effect...
I've compiled avidemux and there is the same problem, so I think is tue to a certain dev librairie like freetype or other.
In ubuntu 8.10 that's work perfectly.

Mplayer have a good support of SSA/ASS and work also in 9.04
I've attached an example with avidemux and mplayer.

Could you be more specific? Where exactly are you trying to load the SSA/ASS file - into the SSA/ASS subtitle filter?

Not sure if it helps, but hopefully it will...
I'm having this same problem. Running hardy heron and using a fresh install of the currently available Avidemux copy obtained from an everyday apt-get install. Here's the exact steps to recreate the error:

1) Open your video
2) In the video sidebar select XviD, configure your options, like bitrate or quality, etc..
3) In the video sidebar press "filters" => subtitles => ASS .
4) After the .ass is added, you can preview but will notice that no subtitles are visible. Then, when hitting Configure to verify the settings are correct and hitting OK, you'll get something like:

SSA Error

Cannot read_file for */home/USER/Desktop/FILE.ass*

I've verified the file isn't messed up, and all the permissions are correct. After digging around for awhile, I found that there as a similar issue for windows users a couple years ago. Apparently the cause of the issue in that one, which seems to be from a Avidemux configuration file that tells it where to find the fonts to use for this filter, was resolved for them. This might be caused by a similar issue, but its just a guess.

Hoping someone can find a solution. :) If there's anything I can do to help, please don't hesitate to email. Thanks!
