Bug Description

Tested on:
alsa-utils 1.0.18-1ubuntu11
gdm 2.20.10-0ubuntu2
ubuntu 9.04 jaunty beta 32 & 64-bit
Hardware: nforce2 & SiS AC'97 (not hardware specific)

Description:
gdmsetup and aplay plays all ogg sound files as loud static. File has been verified and works in other applications. WAV files work in gdmsetup. Please check that the ogg file is not being played with the wrong program (i.e. aplay). When opening an ogg with aplay, the same static is produced.

Steps to reproduce:
-Turn your speakers down as to not be surprised
-On Jaunty go to System > Administration > Login window (spawns /usr/sbin/gdmsetup)
-Go to the "Accessibility" tab
-Select any login sound which is an .ogg file (example: /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/bell.ogg)
-Press the play button

OR

-Turn your speakers down as to not be surprised
-Run the following command:
$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/bell.ogg

What happens?:
gdm/aplay plays ogg file as loud static

What is expected?:
ogg files should should be played correctly

could people also stop using the title to specify the version they are using? that's just going to create extra work and confusion next cycle because the issue will not be jaunty specific but the title suggests it's only in jaunty there

Confirmed on Jaunty RC. Really annoying when you use this sound as greeting. For example set login sound in gdmsetup to a ogg file and then login to your ubuntu...your hear some seconds of really weird sound...not a nice experience for first time users...

Additionally, I think aplay isn't able to hande wmv, too.

Could be solved in another way http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7087507 by editing the file /usr/lib/gdmplay . But question remains: "How could it have been overlooked that gdmplay can't play oggs?!? Most of the gnome sounds are oggs now right?"

right aplay is used so only formats supported by aplay will work

You can use ogg123 to play oggs from the CLI.
