Bug Description

I hope this is the right package to file the bug.

I installed Dapper Flight 5 and sound worked without trouble. Since then I'm upgrading available packages everyday. After yesterdays' upgrade (21/mar/06) the sound doesn't work anymore.

I've downloaded Flight 5 LiveCD and the sound works, so it definitely seems to be something related to the last upgrade.

I've got my sound back after removing the KDE packages. Maybe arts is causing the error in sound...

Hi there. I have a Dell Inspiron 630m - can't find the sound card details, apparently a Sigmatel STAC 9750 AC'97 (?)

I haven't installed KDE, but I have of course the libartsc0 included in the ubuntu-desktoo metapackage. I won't remove it unless a Canonical developer tells me to do so (nothing personal Jieter, you know...) :)

Have you checked with alsamixer , that your master and pcm are not muted?

can you test with something like "mpg321" ?

I did check alsamixer/Volume control. Nothing mute, everything as it was 2 days ago when playing some music.

I have installed mpg321 and I've tried to listen some mp3. Although the "play" works, nothing is heard - same with Rythymbox, Totem, VLC, etc.

@ Quim Gil
I'm not sure arts is the cause of the problem.

@Sebastien Estienne
My computer hung when I tried to output audio to the sound card. It does not matter wether I used totem, beep-media-player, mplayer or mpg321

have you tried booting on an older kernel revision from the grub menu?

@Sebastien Estienne
No, I did not, because it worked after removing all de KDE packages.

Sebastien no, I didn't think abolut this even when I though it could have something to do with kernel-image.

Well, the good news is that sound works with 2.6.15-18-386! It doesn't with the current 2.6.15-19-386.

so you confirm that your regression with sound occured between
linux-image 2.6.15-18-386 and 2.6.15-19-386?
