Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

This bug crashes whole system in a way that is needed hard-reset of the PC.

When playing video using overlay (no matter which player, tested with kaffeine, mplayer, vlc) is going everything fine until you want to open another video in the same window (e.g. drag and drop, or jump in playlist). When there should happen something like reset or re-initialization of the overlay the screen switches to text mode, show few colour rectangles and the computer stay completely freezed (no response to keyborad). In this state has to be used just reset button.

I am using
 - xorg-driver-fglrx 2:8.543-0ubuntu4.1
on
 - 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV730XT [Radeon HD 4670].

amdcccle shows:
- BIOS version: BK-ATI VER011.015.000.008.000000
- GDDR3 memory / 512MB
- 873/750 Mhz
- PCI Express2.0/16x
- driver version 8.54.3, catalyst ver. 2.1

I will try to attach here Xorg.conf and log.

Using radeon or radeonhd on the same device does not cause the same crash.

I will get the xorg.conf and log as soon as possible. I was doing some experiments with configuration and now I cannot get the acceleration in 2d back.

When the acceleration does not work it does not crash.

So it was easy to reproduce:
1. removed all all fglrx stuff unsing envy-ng
2. instlal all the fglrx again using envy
3. aticonfig --initial
4. boot X
5. open player (kaffeine in my case, but it does not really matter)
6. put to video files in playlist and start playing the first one
7. skip to the next one (using the button... or you can watch the first one all if you enjoy the video)
8. crash happens
9. for a while appears the console at F8 key
10. screen gets blank, no response to keyboard

I am attaching the xorg.conf used when creating the log.
In the device section i was trying various flag combinations of options. Mostly as follows:

        Option "TexturedVideo" "on"
        Option "VideoOverlay" "off"
        Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"

An addition:
when i use this combination of switches then it does not freeze, however the performance is worse.
        Option "TexturedVideo" "off"
        Option "VideoOverlay" "off"
        Option "OpenGLOverlay" "on"
