Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Massive Screen Tearing with 9.04. While viewing videos, VLC or Flash, anything that has movement going on the screen, the screen would tear. The problem was also present in 8.10 but appears to be worst with 9.04.

Thank you for reporting this bug. Is the tearing present irrespective if you have desktop effects enabled or not? (System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual effects). When you say "anything that has movement", does that also involve things like moving windows around on the desktop?

Also, I always like to have screen shots of visual bugs, so I would appreciate that if you can upload that.

to answer your question, yes there is screen tearing while moving windows around on the desktop and with visual effects on or off. I would love to post a pic but for some reason "prt sc" button, when pressed, doesnt capture the screen right now.

I had issues with my Intel 4500MHD card in my Vaio TT (VGN-TT15GN) after a fresh install of Jaunty 9.04. Jaunty works fine with the live CD, with Compiz effects enabled and minimal tearing, even on installing the beta build on the HDD it works just fine. Trouble started when I carried out an update last night (14APR09) and whatever has happened to the build between the beta I downloaded on the 11APR09 and the recent updates broke the install.

Firstly I get a lock up at the GDM login screen - at first I thought x was broken as there were almost 'artifacts' (pink 'unrendered' type of thing) but there was no mouse either - I was able to type in username and password but nothing else.

This was only corrected by using the recovery console through GRUB and uninstalling compiz and compiz-core - able to boot fine into a desktop after this. This was after reading on the forums about similiar issues others were having with the Intel graphics chipset.

As mentioned at the outset of this bug - with no compiz enabled, just plain old Gnome I was getting screen tearing when moving a window across the desktop at any speed (slow or fast) - sorry unable to get a screenshot of this as well due to key mapping issues with the Vaio TT fullstop.

I have enabled UXA in xorg.conf and have found the tearing issue has diminished greatly and as a result was able to reinstall compiz and compiz-core which can now be used quite successfully. Able to login and out of the desktop without the freezing issues of the first update.

Hello I can confirm this bug.

I have DELL Studio 1535 with Intel GM965.
I tried Ubuntu 9.04RC i386.

Effects disabled -> Minor XV video tearing, movies unwatchable for me.
Effects enabled -> Major XV video tearing plus general tearing while moving windows.

Is there any hope that the Intel guys will ever fix it?

On 8.04 everything was okay with effects off
On 8.10 problems started
On 9.04 nothing has changed since 8.10

Can you try test kernel from bug 314928 - it has helped with tearing during flash playback for my 4500MHD laptop.
