pidgin failed to start

Binary package hint: pidgin

Since updating the system yesterday, Pidgin no longer works. Invoking from command line leads to

$ pidgin
The messenger is now down
Illegal instruction (core dumped)
$

The pidgin window briefly appears on the screen and seems to be logging into the various accounts before the above message appears and the application crashes.
