Bug Description

debian/patches/00_no-gnome-deps.patch patches generated files (Makefile.in and shell/Makefile.in), which is generally considered poor practice and is certainly confusing when one tries to make further changes.

While indeed you should probably try to avoid introducing a build-dependency on automake1.7, please include corresponding patches to Makefile.am and shell/Makefile.am as well and have the patch include the result of re-running automake1.7.
