No sound on IBM ThinkPad R50e

Binary package hint: hotkey-setup

Sound worked fine a couple of days ago. Then I updated my packages and it stopped working.

* This is not a hardware problem since the beeper works fine.
* The beeper's volume is changing when I press the volume buttons.
* The notifications for both the volume keys and brightness keys stopped appearing (although the brightness buttons are working).
* The program "gnome-keybinding-properties" doesn't seem to "see" the volume buttons.

Now I have sound, but no OSD when i press the volume and the brightness buttons...
