Bug Description

I'm using my Pidgin buddy list inside the Compiz widget layer.

If I hover the mouse in one place long enough to trigger the appearance of a tooltip containing buddy information (which means my mouse is hovering over that particular buddy) the buddy list/widget layer stays where it ought to be. I can move the mouse around within the confines of the particular buddy's name whose tooltip has appeared, however, as soon as I move my mouse farther to the left, right, up, or down (over the scrollbar, or other buddies) the widget layer disappears.

The same disappearing behavior happens if I open the widget layer, click to select the buddy list, and then begin to type to auto-find the buddy whose name I'm looking for. It disappears as soon as I start typing.

The expected behavior here is for the widget layer to remain in focus while I perform these actions.

Hi Jon,

Have added pidgin to the package list. The developers should be in touch soon.

I don't think this is just a problem with Pidgin. I use Gajim and Evolution in the widget layer. If I get a notification, the widget layer disappears (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-osd/+bug/346467), if I click on the title bar of any of the windows the widget layer disappears (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/356374), tooltips in either application cause the widget layer to disappear.

Long story short, this is probably not a Pidgin-specific bug.

dmandell,

I figured as much, which is why I tried to specify this as a Compiz bug rather than a Pidgin bug. It wasn't precisely a duplicate of yours, at least not in my understanding, so that's why I started a new one. Hopefully, whether the same or not, it gets figured out soon enough.

It's difficult to take a screenshot of the issue because the screenshot would be of the desktop (after the widget layer disappeared). The act of trying to take the screenshot actually makes the widget layer disappear, so by the time I try to capture it, I'm already on the desktop. I can tell you how to reproduce the issue though.

In order to reproduce the issue you have to have some sort of application (a terminal window, an IM client roster (like Gajim or Pidgin), a mail client like Evolution, etc) in the widget layer.

In order to reproduce the behavior:

1) Bring up the widget layer
2) Do any of the following:
    a) click on the title bar (top) of your IM client, email client, etc
    b) Mouse over something that pops up a tooltip (IM contact, button, etc), then move mouse away
    c) Right-click on something, then click elsewhere in the same window.
    d) Wait for a notification event to occur (new email, IM contact coming online, etc)

Your widget layer will disappear after any of the above things happen. The widget layer *should* persist until you close it with a keypress (or with a mouse click if that preference is set).

If you need any further explanation please let me know.

+1 on this, similar problem here.

I have disabled "End Widget Mode on Click" in Compiz Config Manager, but when I click on, move or interact with any Screenlet application running on the widget layer in any way, the widget mode closes.

Also running Jaunty 9.04 Release, Compiz 1:0.8.2-0ubuntu
