I had the same problem, but after some research on the web I think this is connected to NetworkManager problem that was in Ubuntu 8.10 - slow system start up due to long lasting network configuring. To resolve that previous problem I erased/commented out everything in /etc/network/ interfaces. As it seems that causes some problems with network configuration that slows down Firefox, cause then I added: interfaces Firefox doesn't hang any more.
auto lo
auto eth0
auto eth1
back to /etc/network/
So my advice is to check Your /etc/network/ interfaces and if it's empty an an 'auto <interface_name>' for every interface U have and it may help.
