Bug Description

I've got problems with actual nvidia drivers (nvidia-glx-new and nvidia-glx-new-envy packages). I have nvidia 8600gt. Drivers work, but there's a problem. For example when I visit helion.pl with firefox or opera gnome just freezes. On other sites it slows down. When I had ubuntu 8.10 I installed 180 drivers from nvidia site and problem disappeared. Now i've got ubuntu 8.04 and I have problems with this. My friend had the same problem. I think more people have the same problem and want it fixed. Sorry for my english.

I would like a backported to confirm or not confirm that this does not
meet backport requirements since libc6 and kernels would need to be
backported as well, status changed to incomplete until backporters comment

The latest Nvidia drivers, 185.18.36, compile and load perfectly well on the latest kernel and C libraries in Hardy (2.6.24-24, 2.7-10ubuntu5). Something more recent than even the envy packages is necessary to support the hardware currently shipping in major OEM system (vis, a Quadro NVS 295 in a Dell Precision T5500 workstation). Until the next LTS release, work to package this version would be really valuable.

When using these drivers with Compiz, I get graphical glitches. Using metacity ("Visual Effects" set to "None"), it works fine. It's an improvement over the prior situation, where I could only get 800x600 resolution using the vesa drivers, and nothing at all with the nvidia and nv drivers in the repositories.
