Bug Description

(Assuming there is only one CD/DVD drive)
breezy and dapper (flight 5)

->Insert a CD/DVD
->Right Click on the desktop icon
->Click on 'Copy Disc ...'

Actual outcome:

The icon disappears as soon as the "Copy Disc ..." dialog box is shown

Expected outcome:

The icon should remain on the desktop until the user actually starts copying, and/or reappear after copying is finished or aborted

Can the CD/DVD be accessed in another way, i.e. through folder view, or is it inaccessible once the desktop icon disappears?

It is inaccessible ... the device (the DVD drive) is un mounted ..

Double clicking on the DVD icon in the My Computer Folder (which is mouting
it again) brings the icon back on the desktop

Thanks for your bug report. While what you state in the bug report is true, you don't mention the "Copy Disc" dialog popping up (which happens at my place). To remove the icon from the Desktop (unmounting it) seems to be the right thing, regarding you want to copy the disc. What is the problem exactly?

If anyone would click on the 'copy disc' option it would be either to make a
image of the disc or directly write a copy of the disc with the second cd
drive.

Why does the icon have to disappear? Why does it have to unmount?

Ok ... assuming there's only a single drive. And one wants to make an iso
image of the cd.

1. Right click on the Desktop cd icon.
2. 'Copy Disc' (the icon disappears)
3. Click on 'Write disc to : CD drive' (where would it write ?? write on
the same disc ? or would it create an image? it creates an image (but
there's another option for creating an image!)

4. OK it creates the image of the disc
4. On finish the tray ejects
6. And in just TWO seconds goes in again (with the same cd !)
7. Complains that data cannot be written

Don't mix differents issues on the same bug. Is that about the icon on the desktop or about the CD beeing ejected only for few seconds after the copy?

what 'more info' do you need?

i say keep the icon (does it have to unmount?) it wouldn't confuse the users

Yeah, it has to unmount it to do the copy, how is that an issue?

Even for creating an image?

^^ sorry for the reposts ... problem with the browser here

my point is: if a user just wants to create a CD/DVD image (iso) he would want the icon to be there once the image is created.

if that doesn't make any sense please close this bug.

thanks

That's how a CD copy works, the tools need an exclusive use of the media to copy it that's why it's unmount and nautilus stops using, I'm rejecting the bug (which is a minor wishlist). Feel free to reopen with some ideas on how to workaround that if you have some

If the disk needs to be unmounted for technical reasons, then that cannot be avoided, but it should be remounted when the operation is done or aborted.
