Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

I have been trying to install avidemux and openoffice using synaptic, but whatever I have tried entering into the search box, I cannot find them using the search bar. Some packages seem to work, others don't. I managed to download avidemux using apt-get in the end, so it is in my repositories.

Using Xubuntu 9.04, development branch

synaptic 0.62.5ubuntu2.1

Thank you for reporting this issue. I can not reproduce it using Xubuntu jaunty up to date as of 2009-04-06. This was attempted using a fresh installation of jaunty. Both the quick search and the normal "Search" worked as I would expect them to.

Was this an upgrade to jaunty? Have you run the updates? Try clicking on the "Reload" icon, then search again.

This was a fresh install of jaunty (downloaded last night). I have kept the same /home drive as in 8.10, though - not sure if this makes a difference.

I have run all the updates, and all repositiories are refreshed.

I'm in the process of completing a fresh install of 9.04 64 bit and I seem to be having the same problem. I can't use either the quick search or search functions in synaptic at all.

Apologies. Ubuntu 9.04. Not Xubuntu as for Charlie above.

Do you still get this bug?
If so, could you try typing
sudo update-apt-xapian-index in a terminal to see if that fixes it.
Thanks!

This one continues to pop up on both my desktop (64 bit) and laptop (32) each time I do a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04. It's happened about six or seven times now. But it is readily fixed using the method Paul Elms suggests above.
