libsndfile1 1.0.17-4ubuntu0.8.04.1 breaks rythmbox playback on ubuntu hardy

Today, playback from rhythmbox suddenly did not work anymore; it worked fine last friday. This is for mp3 files, I did not try other types (don't have them handy).

After reverting libsndfile1 back from 1.0.17-4ubuntu0.8.04.1 (hardy-updates) to 1.0.17-4 (hardy), playback functionality is restored. (I have not checked other players).

Synaptic history reports:

Upgraded the following packages:
libsndfile1 (1.0.17-4) to 1.0.17-4ubuntu0.8.04.1

I would not expect an update of a library to break core functionality (reading soundfiles!).

I'm running ubuntu hardy (2.6.24-21-generic), fully updated. rhythmbox 0.11.5-0ubuntu8.
Please let me know if you need further details about this problem.

Thank you for the bug report. Unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce it. mp3 files work fine for me in rhythmbox after updating libsndfile.

Could you please list the steps necessary to reproduce this problem?

Also, are you having problems on specific mp3 files or on all of them?

Could you try restarting your session after updating libsndfile?

OK, I upgraded again to the latest libsndfile (1.0.17-4ubuntu0.8.04.1),
and no problems anymore... (listening to Rod Stewart right now), also
not after logout/login.

So, no, I cannot reproduce either.

The problems occurred with several (randomly selected) mp3 files.

Running from cmdline gave no output, other than some startup messages
about missing plugins, that it now also still reports -- with Rod
Stewart still playing :-)

Perhaps the problem was related to something else in (or during) the
upgrade, but I have no idea what or why. (There was a gstreamer update,
with some associated codecs and libs, but that was March 17.)

Other than that, I had some login/session quirks friday evening and this
morning.
