Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

The crash occurred in response to me enabling desktop effects from the KDE Desktop -System Settings tool. Desktop effects has been enabled and is currently working despite the crash.

I'm testing the Kubuntu 9.04 beta with an ATI card + the fglrx drivers. Previous testing that I've down with NVidia drivers didn't show any problems with enabling desktop effects. I very much suspect it's related to the use of the fglrx drivers.

I've been testing the Kubuntu 9.04 beta + ATI/fglrx combinations for the past three days and have found that enabling Desktop effects is typically cause the desktop to go mostly black with random flickers of the expected desktop appearing and disappearing tantalisingly. Just occasionally the enabling has succeeded after a bit of black/normal flicker and once it's settled it works great with no stability problems. However, the number of times that the flickering actually settled down was probably about 1 in 10, and a reboot always caused problems to the pointer that had to do a Ctrl Alt Fx and then manually disable the Kwin effects be editing the KDE settings using vi... Any this was all rather too bleeding edge so I typically settled back into using the system with desktop effects.

As I've seen updates the glx/mesa etc. coming in over updates this morning I thought I'd try the desktop effects again and things had improved w.r.t enabling desktop effects, I still see the black/normal desktop flicker but now it's pretty brief before the desktop settles. On reboot the desktop does flicker when X comes up but again it's settles and the desktop then works fine with desktop effects. So there has certainly been progress, I couldn't say whether the progress is down to just timing of initialization just so happening to work better today, or whether one of the patches applied this morning directly fix problems - it would seem to be the later so kudos to who ever's been working on this :-)

I will keep hammering the desktop/desktop effects to see if anything else useful appears that might help track down the stability issues of enabling desktop effects on ATI/fglrx.
