i have the same error message also after upgrading 9.04.
Also observed in previous version of Ubuntu: see bug 305090

Seems to be a problem with old system-wide configuration files of tex-common.
A solution that worked once is:
$ sudo apt-get --purge remove tex-common
... and then reinstall texlive
Can anyone confirm that this works more than once?

Hi there!

I had the same problem with installing the package - it's all about an old error message that will be put out about "an over 5 year old latex.."

because of this message the build will fail.
