Bug Description

Hi Ubuntu team,

i've tried to install dapper flight 5 on my workstation, but the installation stucked at the formating progress. I've noticed two different behaviours at the installation:

first one:

1. boot from cd "Install to the harddisk"
2. select language and keyboard settings to german
3. setup network with dhcp
4. partitioning setup:
-> harddisk 1: 3 partitions, first is "/" (ext3), second is swap, third is data (ext3)
-> harddisk 2: 3 windows partitions, first is ntfs, second is ntfs, third is fat32
5. accept to format the first and second partition of the first harddisk (other partitions remain)
6. format progress bar loads to 100% and hangs (no harddisk activities)

second one:

-> all steps from the first one but...
-> ...format progress bar finished at 100% and disappears
-> the blue screen remains and nothing happens then (no harddisk activities )

A look in the dmesg output shows the error message that appears every 10-20 seconds.

"[4294898.494000] ata1: command 0x25 timeout, stat 0x50 host_stat 0x24"

In both cases i'm not able to restart the pc with CRTL+ALT+DEL. After that i boot the pc with the cd into a shell and tried to setup the partitions by hand. I've noticed the same behavior (and error messages) by running the "mkfs.ext3" command. Perhaps it's an driver issue.

I am using Beta 2 and in my case the installation has hanged twice when I have manually set the partitions.

I first deleted all partitions and then made hda "/", hdb "/home" and hdc "swap". In the next screen the installer offered to create filesystems to "/" and "swap". I selected all of the partitions and changed the order so that hda was at the topmost box and hdc at the bottom. I also verified that these pointed to correct mount points. Then I clicked Install.

After a short file the installer started to create the filesystems and exited wit an error message saying something like root file system not found (I was using localised version so am not sure of the exact message).

I had to reboot the machine to get the installer to work again.

The third time I did the partitioning I did not remove any partitions and at the next screen didn't change the order of the filesystems - just added the missing one (home?) and selected all to be formatted. This time the installer worked.

Did you use the entire disk, or create partions and use, e.g. hda1, instead of just hda?

If you used the entire disk, I think that's your problem.

Mikko, your bug is not the same as this one. It is very likely bug 37872 instead, which is fixed in current daily builds.
