Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Upgraded to 9.04 last night from 8.10 and everything seemed to work fine but when I restarted I got a blank screen. Can't Control+alt+fx to terminals or anything. Tried all the workarounds in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen but they all result in a blank screen besides using the VESA driver which results in streaks across the screen.

ADDED: using the onboard Intel GMA x4500 video card on a gigabyte GA-EG41M-S2H motherboard with a Dell 1704fpt 17" monitor (1280x1024 max resolution)

Interestingly, the Jaunty live CD worked fine on this same system but the upgrade did not. Register dumps and log files for both the liveCD and upgrade configurations are attached below.

Could you please include the type of video card you have? and the max resolution of your monitor. This often happens in other distros and it is usually something with hardware that wasn't thought of before the release. The problem is usually fixable with a patch. Thanks.

I found the right log to diagnose this problem (/var/log/gdm/:0.log) and found that xorg was failing when trying to load the ati fglrx graphics drivers. It seems jaunty had removed the drivers only partially. Anyway, I just purged the fglrx drivers and now my video works fine.

Just to clarify how I fixed this -
$ apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx
