Bug Description

When I do a log off of the section, KDM and X do not come back. It is necessary logging in the Command Line Interface and restarting KDM manually, after that KDM and X come back.

This has worked from Kubuntu 6.06 until Kubuntu 8.10 and now it does not work anymore.

I'll mark this as a bug in kdm since gdm works fine.

According to the log X is crashing, which is a driver issue.

Hi Guys, I did two downloads today. One of Ubuntu 9.04 Beta and other of Kubuntu 9.04 Beta.

The tests results were:

Ubuntu 9.04: "Login and Logoff" is working fine, after logging off the GDM screen appears.

Kubuntu 9.04: "Login and Logoff" is not working fine once after logging off the KDM screen does not appear and just the black screen is turned on.

Again, it might actually be a driver issue, after all there is and error according with lox X, but GDM seems to be working fine against this issue and the same does not happen for KDM in Kubuntu 9.04.

Best Regards,

Alan Fischer e Silva

Any update so far? If it is a xserver-xorg issue, why the error is happening on Kubuntu, but not in Ubuntu?

The importance of this Bug should be high. If an end user does logout/logoff he/she can not get back (Just if restarts KDM manually, what is a big inconvenience and an end user will not know how to do that).

Confirmed for Kubuntu 9.04 final amd64 using an ATI HD3200 graphics card, default-(open-source-)driver. It's a shame to release this as a final version...

I found a quickly solution for this bug. =)

As I want to use a good flavor of KDE 4.2 and Kubuntu is not providing me that (once my desktop is shared between me and my father, and my father does not know how to restart KDM), I tried the Mandriva Spring RC2 and it is working pretty better than the final version o Kubuntu 9.04.

So you can close this bug guys, as in almost 3 weeks no one give any update to it. I will use Mandriva Spring RC2 =)

Alan Fischer e Silva

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.04). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 352804, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Sorry guys, I don't have that machine with SiS driver onboard anymore. So I won't be able to test it. (With Intel graphics on my other machines I never had such problem).

At least for my Mobility Radeon HD3200, where I'm sure to have been affected by exactly this bug, I can say that Kubuntu Lucid Beta2/RC works. Logout shows KDM login screen again as it is expected.

But I must also say that solving such critical bugs takes too much time. When a critical system component hangs each time it is used, it cannot be acceptable to wait one year / two releases until it works again. Maybe responsible persons should check their priorities if there are not enough people to help fixing issues. I like to test and report bugs, but it makes no sense when critical bugs are not fixed and a system hangs all the time so it is unusable.
