I can confirm something similar (as no evidence of kernel oops)

Have just installed 9.04 (32bit) on a Compaq A900 (A975EM) and although it appears to suspend and resume fine the first time. The second time it appears to suspend but does not resume. This is with all standard updates applied as of 7th September so kernel version 2.6.28-15-generic. Further details may be possible but this is a friends computer and I have only very occasional access.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest Karmic 9.10 release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If the issue remains, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) while running Karmic. It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report.

apport-collect -p linux 352583

Thanks in advance

I can confirm that at least with a live boot cd of 9.10 this situation still exists in both 32bit and 64bit, but as before I only have limited access to this machine. I will attempt to get hold of it again and install 9.10 so that I can try your suggestion. Thank you for your attention in this matter as I was wondering quite where to go with it, beyond waiting for 10.04.

Would it be sufficient to use the live boot cd without any updates as this machine is in constant use and I may well be able to arrange this much quicker than an entire upgrade and then apport-collect?

@Philip,

I would be more convenient to update to last karmic kernel.

Thanks in advance.

I have access to the machine for a couple of days and just done a clean install of 9.10 and applied all updates prior to submitting the above via your suggested command. I am happy to try what ever to diagnose. It is still the case that the first suspend resume from power up work, but the second suspend resume fails on resume where the hd does not even wake up; requiring the power button to be held in to power down from that failed resume.

Thanks, I have also just followed the procedure detailed at:-
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
But all I got from the resulting dmesg of the boot just after hung resume was:-

[ 1.720539] Magic number: 0:291:348
[ 1.720542] hash matches /build/buildd/linux-2.6.31/drivers/base/power/main.c:419
[ 1.720658] rtc_cmos 00:03: setting system clock to 2052-12-10 21:19:28 UTC (2617478368)

This is completely repeatable, every first suspend resume is fine and every second (from clean power on) results in the same hang and the same magic number. The CD drive sounds like it is at least partially initialized but the hd does not power up. There is no evidence (flashing lights) of oops here. Thank you for your attention in this matter. My friend has two identical machines and my report earlier referring to the 32bit and 64bit boot cd test of 9.10 suspend resume was with the other machine to the one I now have so that should rule out some things (all updates applied to this install of 9.10 made no difference in behavior to the suspend resume problem.

I am happy to try what ever to assist. Thanks again for your attention in this matter.

This bug does seem very similar to #234519 "Compaq Presario C700 series (C756CA) always freezes the second time when resuming from Suspend to RAM"

I have also just tried updating the bios from F.33 to F.34 but this did not help.

I have no contribution to this bug description, but I do have an a900 and i don't understand why this bug isn't even assigned to anybody who can try to solve it. There seems to be put great effort in boot-up time, but that doesn't bother me the least if I can just use suspend...
