Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I have a X700 card, suspend works fine with fglrx and intrepid. With jaunty, my card won't be supported anymore by fglrx, so if I have to switch to ati open driver.

With ati open source driver, the laptop actually suspends, but has problems with resume. It resumes, but video is all black, if I quickly move the mouse, I can see the arrow going around but no windows/menus are present. By switching to consolle, I'm able to restart xorg with 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart'.

From the dmesg log it looks like there is a problem with your live CD. I'd suggest you download a new daily-live and burn it again.

In Xorg.0.log I found this to be strange:
drmGetBusid returned ''

It is also possible there are suspend issues on the live CD which do not arise when it is installed on a hard drive, especially if the CD media is mounted through USB, although that seems not to be your particular case.

I did other tests on Intrepid, the result is that with ati open driver, it suspends but never wakes up.

I downloaded jaunty beta and burnt it on a different media. I keep getting those squashfs errors, is that what you mean by 'problems with the cd'? Attached you can find new dmesg and xorg log, but the result is the same. After suspeding, resume leaves me a blank screen, in order to see X again, I have to switch to consolle and 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart'.

Does it work for you also in Intrepid?

Yes, those squashfs errors indicate an underlying problem with running from a broken CD (or broken player, or bad RAM). Before you solve these problems, do not expect other stuff to work right. I'd recommend making a "live CD" USB stick with the "USB startup disk creator" under System->Administration.

I followed your advice and booted jaunty beta with a usb stick. Suspend worked three times in a row with absolutely no problems with standard config.

I had a really hard time by figuring out how to boot via usb with my machine, which doesn't support usb booting. I will update this wiki page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromUSB) shortly with my findings.

Thank you very much,
Matteo
